All of the violence in Chechnya started in 1991, when the USSR collapsed. After this happened, Dzhokhar Dudayev was elected and claimed independence. Then in 1994 Russia sent troops into Chechnya to stop the Independence movement. The people leading this were local Russian separatists and Chechen rebels. Many bombings and shootings contributed to the uprising.

The people of Chechnya are frustrated with the Russian government. They want to be free and independent. They want to form their own country. The people's lives are very restricted and censored, but TV is an important asset in spreading news and is present in every household. Chechen news papers and radio stations struggle and compete against Russian ones.
