Chechnya, a sub-division of Russia, has not maintained independence. Chechens declared independence after Russian troops left Chechnya after the First Chechen War. This was quickly ended when Russia decided to re-occupy Chechnya.

This led to the Second Chechen War. Russia has been the ultimate cause for the disruption of Chechnya's independence. Chechnya was rich in oil and had a stable economy, all this, and Chechnya's capital Grozny, was destroyed when the Chechen Wars broke out.
